Vintage Chinese Sewing Basket with Peking Glass Bangle Silk Tassel

Lovely Chinese Sewing Basket, with Green Peking Glass Bangle, Orange Silk Tassel and Braided Cord.

History: These were made for export in the early part of the 20th century and were extremely popular as gifts and curios in all of the major metropolitan "Chinatown" neighborhoods. This early sewing basket continues the Chinese tradition of using a thin silk rope to attach beads and coins to the top of the basket. They were also used in China for women who carried their embroidery work and supplies during travels and visits. This standard basket style was often given as a gift to young adolescent girls who were becoming teenagers.

Date of Manufacture: 1920-1930s.

Material: Bamboo and woven wickerwork, glass bangle, silk cording and tassel.

Color: The color is a rich mahogany hue, most likely tea stained wicker.

Condition:
Basket: Very Good, the top and bottom are very well shaped and fit together nicely. Some spotting and discoloration which is mostly visible on interior, with a few black spots on basket top of lid..
One small piece of the woven wickerwork on the interior of lid has split.
Decoration: Fair: One glass bangle and tassel remain, (most baskets had coins and at least two bangles/tassels). This tassel has a metallic thread which is coming loose but still remain to wrap the tassel strands. Braided cord is faded but intact. Some thread remain where other decoration would have been attached.One bead on the braiding has broken, partially attached. The other brown bead is still intact.

Markings: None.

Size: 10.5 inches across diameter by 3.75 inches tall.
