Adorable Vintage Japanese Lusterware Salt & Pepper Owls in Nest Set of Three

"Lusterware or Lustreware (respectively the US and all other English spellings) is a type of pottery or porcelain with a metallic glaze that gives the effect of iridescence, produced by metallic oxides in an overglaze finish, which is given a second firing at a lower temperature in a "muffle kiln", reduction kiln, which excludes oxygen."

Style: Two Owls featuring 7 holes on top of head (salt holes are smaller) evenly drilled into a circular pattern. "Nest" holder designed to give each owl a leaf seat, with attached twig loop handle to lift set. Two acorns are attached at front center of tray.

Markings: Made in Japan stamped on bottom of all three pieces.

Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks. Pepper shaker is missing cork stopper.

Quality: Very Good to Fair--some missed paint glaze spots, as common in 1930-1940s tourism trade Lusterware.

Colors: Top of Holder lift is gold. Leaf seats are peach on top and soft blue on sides. Acorns are rich yellow and brown. Bottom unpainted or unglazed. Owl color: Blue back, light irridescent yellow front. Black outline around peach wings, with black feather detail. Black and white eyes, with dark peach perimeter. Black beak and talon detail. Bottom of owls are glazed white.

Size: Owls: 2 3/4 inches tall by 1 3/4 inches wide. Base diameter 1 1/2 inches. Tray/Nest/Holder: 6 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches at widest. Height of tray: 3 inches tall.
